They first emerged in 1900. They quickly became very popular, as they are one of the most popular fast food items on a menu, being the most practical as it does not require a plate. This is because the tortilla was used for several foods.
On the other hand, the theory is that this dish got its name because it was sold on a cart carried by donkeys (Juan Méndez, born in Mexico, used a donkey to carry the provisions for his food cart, occupying a flour tortilla to maintain them hot).
Although there are several theories about its origin or why it was not called a taco, the best known is that the burrito is wrapped to keep the food warm, unlike the taco that is open. Another reason is that the taco uses a small traditional corn tortilla.
Trade between other states allowed the burrito to manifest itself and begin to be consumed, becoming one of the most requested options in Mexican restaurants and in those that keep many traditions.
Normally, the filling of burritos is meat and beans. It is prepared with ground beef cooked with taco seasonings, refried beans, shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, and onions. The burritos are classified in:
- Sausage, Egg, and Cheese (Fill your tortilla with scrambled eggs, sausages, and grated cheddar cheese.)
- Chicken in Green Sauce (Brown some chicken thighs, skinless and boneless, in olive oil in a pot, then pour a bottle of green sauce on top. Shred the chicken and top with shredded cheese and sour cream before folding the tortilla.)
- Spicy shrimp with avocado and sour cream (Prepare a marinade with 1 tablespoon of honey, 3 tablespoons of olive oil, a few hints of hot sauce and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, 500 grams of peeled shrimp and let it rest for 1 or 2 hours. Serve them inside a burrito with rice and a sauce made with guacamole and sour cream.)
- For leftover pork (cooked pork and black beans, rice, and cheese add chopped onions, shredded cheddar cheese, and some sliced jalapeños for spiciness).
- Leftover chicken (roast chicken meat and along with mole sauce simmered for about 30 minutes. Mix the chicken with refried beans, minced onion and grated cheese).
- From roasted vegetables (zucchini, onion, green and / or red pepper and mushrooms in similar sizes. Dress them with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 15 minutes. Roll the roasted vegetables with rice and cheese on the tortillas to make the burritos).
- Rib and blue cheese (Place the meat in pieces with blue cheese mixed with a little of sour cream).
- Vegetarians with vegetables and egg (diced onion with diced green and red bell peppers, corn and sliced jalapenos, add minced garlic the last minute of cooking, cook scrambled eggs seasoned with salt and pepper. Sprinkle veggies on burrito and the eggs, plus fresh coriander leaves and chunky cheese.
- Cheese and Crab (softened cream cheese with grated Jack cheese and ½ teaspoon paprika. Gently fold in the crab meat. Roll into tortillas and bake over medium heat for 20 minutes. Serve the cheese and crab burritos with sour cream mixed with juice lemon and a pinch of sliced chives).
- Avocado and black bean (black beans, onion minced in a skillet until soft; minced garlic, ¼ cup of water and 2 teaspoons of ground cumin, make the burritos with the black beans, slices of ripe avocado and sour cream).
- Caesar salad (Make a Caesar salad and fill the burritos with the salad).
